CFA in the Community
Brigades in Schools

'Brigades In Schools’' is a fire safety education program targeted at primary school students.
The lessons are delivered in the classroom by trained CFA Volunteer.
‘Brigades In Schools’ aims to teach knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors related to:
- Personal fire safety
- Home fire safety
- Outdoor fire safety
- Bushfire preparedness, and
- CFA in the community
Children can play an important role in spreading fire safety messages to their families and the wider school community.
‘Brigades In Schools' lessons are designed to be interactive with plenty of opportunities for children to be actively involved learning how to “stop, drop and roll” if their clothes are on fire, and how to “crawl low in smoke” to safely escape a house fire.
‘Brigades In Schools' lessons and worksheets have been written for children from prep to grade 6. The material is grouped to suit the following levels:
- Prep to grade 2
- Grades 3 and 4
- Grades 5 and 6
Where appropriate CFA personnel are able to bring the truck and other fire fighting equipment to the school and explain its application to the children, however the focus of the lesson is generally around fire safety and prevention.

Kyneton Primary School Fate

A highlight of the Kyneton Primary School Fete on Saturday 7th October was the visit of two appliances from the Kyneton Fire Brigade. The Brigade’s urban pumper and 4WD support vehicle were brought to the school as part of the Country Fire Authority’s Community Safety & Public Service efforts.
Many young visitors to the fete took the opportunity to take an ‘up-close’ inspection, sitting in the vehicles and operating horns, sirens & lights. Very popular was the making of announcements to friends and parents through the public address system incorporated in the pumper’s warning system.
Firefighters and brigade members were on hand to supervise and answer questions and demonstrate on board equipment. Many fire safety stickers and booklets were distributed.
Kyneton Fire Brigade Volunteers Bluey Day Foundation Challenge A Success!

Twenty One emergency services personal from three organisations raised over $4,00.00 dollars from merchandise sales and donations in the annual Bluey Day Headshave.
The six Kyneton CFA volunteers, nine SES volunteers and juniors from Woodend and six police officers from Kyneton and Castlemaine either shaved their heads or died their hair in support for children living with Cancer and other serious illnesses.
Some of the participants opted for shaking a collection tin on Bluey Day August 26th, while others raised several hundred dollars by seeking sponsors for the Headshave. A trophy which was donated by the CFA volunteers for the organisation which raised most funds was awarded to the Woodend SES.
John Bonello from the Kyneton Fire Brigade who organized the local emergency services challenge was pleased with the final result and whished to thank all those who participated. “several family members and friends baked items for the cake stall and a steady crowd of supporters came to watch their co-workers, family and friends getting shaved”. John Bonello also acknowledged the tremendous support by local businesses and the general public who gave generously towards the Bluey Day Fundraising Headshave.
Certificates of appreciation were also presented to all those who participated and were signed by Kyneton Fire Brigade captain, Brett Magrath, SES Controller Clive Hubert and Senior Sergeant from Kyneton Police Marty Allison.
